Many thanks to AlphaJammer for lending me his copy of Gurren Lagann. I decided not to bother with captions this week because it's really way more fun to draw and decide what the story is going to be based on what I determine myself capable of drawing. Reader's should also note I elected to use pencil this week, and favored a high res photo over a scanned image. So I'm kinda experimenting here because...well I guess because I can do whatever I want.

I've had it in mind for some time to experiment with an original idea for a new weekly strip almost certainly meaning I'd have to abandon this one (not that anyone cares). But circumstance and other priorities (playstation) keep delaying me from making much headway. So for now I'm settling for drawing myself into a mecha comic for the next month, as a chance to experiment with drawing different subjects, and as an homage to some of my favorite manga, which, oddly enough inspired the desire to write, but not the confidence to draw. At least not until I entered the bad half of my twenties. Go figure.

I also want to add that I'm open to suggestions for the next series of panels...and mad nerd points to anyone that can ID the mecha design I ripped off. Your clue is "The Lynn Minmay Defense."

Oh yeah, I also got around to making another movie poster during my sabbatical.

And please excuse my sloppiness! My PC is temporarily down, so I'm doing the best I can without access to any of my stuff this week. Since I can't manually change some of the hyperlinks on a Mac (lame) there will be some broken or weird links happening on my site. Like you care.

The Only Good Tea Bagger Is...

...to be fair, the only good tea bagger is someone that gets the irony behind a group of Homophobic Conservatives willing to adopt the name "Tea Bagger" to describe their collective political ideology. I always understood that
this was the accepted definition of "tea bagging."

I think this comparison is pretty hilarious, though a little disturbing considering one clip is from a movie made 13 years ago by someone who actually lived through the Nazi regime and probably has a more informed opinion about "socialist bastards." It's also worth pointing out that life all to often ends up imitating art...especially art that seemed radical and somewhat campy at the time of it's making.

There's a certain grunginess to '80's sci-fi that disappeared when CGI became a standard. The ease and range of stuff you can achieve with computers might be more desirable but the attention to detail is missing from modern FX and replaced with this weird sense of sterility I never really bought into.

It's most apparent of course in the Star Wars prequels - and I think it largely contributed to their lackluster reception by the general public. I'm going to make a general statement and blame The Matrix for this shift in aesthetics. Nothing against that movie but I think it inspired this kind of push towards boring visuals and simplified plot devices (like everything Kurt Wimmer had done thus far). Minority Report tends to stand out as one of the only mainstream movies of the 2000's that didn't adopt that sterile simplified look, although the color treatment definitely pays homage to it. There are other films from the last decade that would illustrate my point, but this tangent is a little long already. Suffice to say that dirty, gritty, apocalyptic look that I fell in love with during my formative years is slowing seeping back into the mainstream. Now that I sound like a hopeless nostalgic, here's the movie that inspired this rant.

Also took the liberty of re-watching the abysmal failure that is David Lynch's Dune. What can I say it still looks cool.

Writing a blog about what I'm doing is like reading a journal entry to an absent minded pet puppy. Maybe that's a terrible analogy but as I type this I legitimately wonder who is reading it. Especially after my escapades with John on broadcast TV.

I have a new follower who appears to be Japanese. It's not Mr. Sugitsuka - as he would likely comment in English - but shout out to said stranger in any case. And if you are the guy/gal that is responsible for this...thank you very much sir or ma'am.

In any case, since I have some kind of following, it stands to reason that I should keep updated bulletins on the blogosphere, at the very least to justify to myself my total lack of output. So here's my excuse. I'm spending all of my spare time learning Motion Graphics and Screenwriting. Hopefully it will eventually pay off, and at some point I'll reach a point where I'm consistently making new stuff to share. Until then, reviewing movies and bitching about Glenn Beck will have to take a back seat. Many sorries to my followers. All two of them.

The Book of the New Sun

I asked my roommate if she had any interesting science fiction to recommend having discussed the Dune series at length several weeks prior. She gave me this.

Now, I consider myself a more-than-casual-aficionado of the most undervalued genre, so I was shocked that I had never encountered this author before - especially after I finished the first volume.

I generally hesitate to make any kind of broad statements about someones work before I've had time to digest it in it's entirety - but the Book of the New Sun is the best science fiction I've read since LeGuin's Hainish Cycle (Left Hand of Darkness, and The Disposessed specifically). In fact it's shaping up to be more impressive in scope and allegory than anything Frank Herbert conceived in his career. Do yourself a favor and get a hold of this book.

So it was nice to end the year with a legit youtube music video. It's something I'm proud of and I'm genuinely pleased to see people are responding positively to something I worked so hard to create. There is no comic again this week - but - my site is undergoing practical and creative alterations that may consume a considerable amount of time. In the meantime, I need to share this bit of information - because my video has been reposted in Japan.

This is particularly awesome for me because - with the North American release of Bayonetta I've reconnected with a part of my formative years that has been riding the proverbial bench for way too long. This of course coincides with my first viewing of Eva Rebuild 1.1 You Are (Not) Alone. Hearing the Eva-esque remix of Fly Me to the Moon stirred up an element in my consciousness, and I was shocked to realize how much I have drifted emotionally and intellectually away from the things that were so important to me in my youth.

In short, it's the nerd element. I've been so absorbed with New York City, and approaching a legit career as a filmmaker and being a responsible adult - and failing - and failing and - and using dashes because I wish I was Jack Kerouac - that I let myself get taken over by preconceptions of what I thought adulthood and responsibility and art were supposed to be. (forgive me - lost yer address, drunk)

(pause)

(because we're doing some word jams)

So now that I started this blog I don't know how to finish it. I am admittedly sleepy and drunky. I am sure I had some brilliant epiphany that was worth sharing, but, now - no idea. Or do I? the epiphany might be that I'm comfortable using the word "drunky" in a sentence. Or maybe it's something more fer cereal.

My Principles Thus Far

I've been examining my life in a rather arduous attempt to figure out a strategy with which to direct my energies. A by product of this evaluation has been a list of principles. It's very short because I think a principle is something that an individual should adhere to without ever threatening the integrity of another principle - and yet should not necessarily have to conform to anyone elses' ideas.

There is an index card above my humble wood-composite Ikea desk. Thus far it has three brief scribbles written hastily on it - the latter of which I added before writing the superfluous paragraph above.

The index card reads -

Principles:
-Quality
-Synchronize Data
-Nothing is Private

I'll try to elucidate as well as I can. Quality is the first and most sound thing I can come up with. It's a simple philosophy housed in a single utterance. I think it can be applied to any facet of a persons life - be it career, relationships, friendships, investments. One should never approach a thing without the intention of achieving the highest possible quality. At the time I meant it to be applicable to my career. But it has evolved.

Synchronize Data?

Still trying to figure out what the fuck this means. It made perfect sense after a particularly lucid dream I had one morning this last month. My guess is, it's a roundabout way of saying "do your research, get all your ducks in a row." And yet there's a cryptic quality to it that I can't fathom. More on this one when I figure it out.

Nothing is Private. Perhaps not the best possible phrase to describe an ideal principle. Perhaps it's to idiosyncratic to my own experience (and yet that's what this list is all about) for me to able to explain well - but I can start by asserting that I've always been what I would consider to be a private person. I almost feel like I want to paraphrase Corinthians here - suffice it say that I was private as a child and as a man I have gradually come to understand the subtle and all encompassing nature that we mean when we say "six degrees of separation."

This one is of particular concern to the oft taciturn gent as myself, and yet in an epiphany I've come to understand that if we consider this basic principle as an inevitability we can come to understand and evaluate the actions we make in terms of how deeply they can effect the world. Inadvertently.

Some other thoughts vying for a position on the list include:
-Always be on time
-Never expect to be rewarded
-Always look good

As my comic grows more ambitious, it begins to take up larger chunks of free time. I've never managed my time well and - when you combine this flaw with an inferiority complex and a host of other insecurities - you get an odd formula for a human being that is bursting with creative energy and drive that often gets overwhelmed and disoriented by an endless range of possibilities that don't quite fit in with the range of talent that's been developed. That's me in a nutshell. I always know what I want, but I've seldom had the patience to stick with anything for to long.

So why the need for a pedantic self-absorbed blog about a frivolous thing like this stupid cartoon?

I planned to begin my comic in December of 2007 because I felt trapped and unproductive. That said it might seem odd that it took over a year for me to get around to posting the first issue. But when you consider the character behind it it's not so unusual. I second guess some of my best ideas even as they come into fruition.

The history behind this sites fruiton is pretty dull. I drew the first 5 comics between August and December of 2008. Although it only took me a few hours to actually put the thing together I had to reaquire the confidence to draw after a 4 year abscence (which let's be honest, is kinda lame because I really can't draw). I also had to sit down and figure out the basics of Dreamweaver and photoshop - two programs that I am still learning.

But now that I've sketched 40 comics of varying quality, I'm pretty endeared to the process despite the extra stress it adds to my week. I've definitely put out some drawings I'm not proud of - but I like to think there are some pretty fucking good ones too. I've reached a wierd impasse where I've acknowledged that my previously non-existent graphic design skills and drawing skills both need to improve to get to a standard of quality that I am now aspiring to. All this means is that I find it harder to continue without dedicating more time to this site - and I intend to make it happen.

So in answer to the query posted above - I am aware that people are visiting my site. I don't know who you are, nor do I particularly care. I'm just kind of happy that total strangers know who I am - though I'll likely never meet them. This simple fact has actually motivated me to continue spending the time on this stupid project even when I don't want to.

So I'm writing to let said total strangers know that this weeks comics is one of the funniest drawings I will ever do and I don't want to rush it. It's more difficult than anything I've ever done and I'm pretty proud of that. This whole site and blog are also getting remodeled as soon as my life allows it. Because as long as i can stand it I want this comic to be a consistent prescence.

This is all of course, a very deliberate posting to assure myself that I'm accomplishing more than I actually am. But the fact is I have a lot of work to do so I don't feel shitty about missing my 3rd week in Bob Officer Sucks out of the first 40. I'm also pretty certain I will have redesigned the page for Thanksgiving, and by the beginning of 2010 I'll have found a space to showcase my newest video. On top of that I'm pressuring myself very heavily to start taking writing seriously as a career. Which means I won't be blogging (6 in September down from 20 in May) but this is of course, the direction I want my life to be heading - i.e. workin' for myself.

Syfy is going to start airing Monster in October. This is a series I've been interested in for a while though I think this is it's North American debut. Exciting!

My good friend and former roomate Alpha Jammer Visco gave me a copy of a Rumiko Takahashi art book with all kinds of Ranma 1/2 drawings and such. Made me feel nostalgic and realize how heavily I was influenced by anime in general during my formative years. Thus I've decided to return to my roots, especially since I've felt outside of myself recently.

My entire collection of fansubs was pretty much given away when I left home. Thank heavens advances in Flash video have made it possible to replace anything from my childhood with a few torrent searches.

Furthermore - I've decided Uniqlo has finally made it okay - if not fashionable - to express an interest in manga and anime without having to feel particularly wierd. They sold me a pretty sweet t-shirt for this series pictured in the video below.
